About Jack Travers and the Race
Jack Travers was an active man. I grew up hearing stories from my father about his high school days where he was the star of the football team, the basketball team, the track team, the baseball team. Although occasionally I suspected some of the stories were exaggerated, I couldn’t deny that he was athletic. From our family ski trips that started at sunrise and ended when they kicked us off the mountain to my father’s competitive wiffleball or horseshoe games at family gatherings to the hours of mountain bike trails my father and sister traversed, he was never one to just sit around (except of course when the Red Sox were on). In September of my freshman year of high school, my father was diagnosed with cancer of unknown primary. We knew that he didn’t take anything lying down, so we had reason to believe that he would make it. Although given a grim diagnosis, my father fought hard; he even planned a family ski trip between his bouts of chemotherapy. As time stretched on, my father became weaker. To cope with the transformation, I ran. I dedicated myself to track, finding that it alleviated my own suffering. Ever since my father passed on June 21, I have wanted to do something to honor him.
This year marks the second annual Christmas in July 5k road race after a sucessful 2012 event. The race started to celebrate my dad’s active lifestyle, but has quickly grown to represent all cancer surviors and victums. As an offically affliated Dana Farber event, Christmas in July 5k will welcome competitive runners, proud cancer survivors, and local community members who want to support a good cause.
About Dana Farber Cancer Institute
Dana Farber Cancer Research Insitute is located in Boston, MA. Since 1947, Dana Farber has been dedicated to providing top of the line cancer treatment to patients. Dana Farber consistantly ranks high nationally; they were even named the number one pediatric cancer program in New England in 2010. Their extensive research has been recognized by national organizations, like the American Cancer Society and American Association for the Advancement of Science. On a personal note, my father was treated here from 2006-2007 and constantly raved about the doctors and nurses.
About the Jimmy Fund
The Jimmy Fund was founded in 1948 when the Boston Braves baseball team visited a 12 year old cancer patient dubbed "Jimmy." The encounter was publicized on a national radio broadcast. Contributions poured from people everywhere and the Jimmy Fund was born. Currently the Jimmy Fund is a subsidiary of Dana Farber and is well known for its 50 year relationship with the Boston Red Sox. The clinic is devoted to treating adults and children with cancer.
